Why Follow Kyoto Sanga? - Tradition Embodied in a Football Club

A land of tradition blending football into the beautiful acres of old buildings and authenticity. What better club to be introduced to the J-League to, than with the oldest football team on the league table.


"Sangha" meaning group or club in the classical language of Sanskrit embodies the togetherness and community-tailored culture of Kyoto Sanga.


The Kansai-based football side dons a noticeable and unique purple color almost akin that to Fiorentina's. However, the purple colouring is due to the imperial status of the city - echoing the dye used from gromwell, which was a plant often associated with the administrative errands in the old ages.


It can also be associated with the Wisteria Season which blooms in April, in the city - a beautiful time where the elegant botanics are displayed.


Sanga's football history is one of hardships - once even enduring an eleven year absence from the top flight, however were rewarded with two J2 titles which saw them return each time.


So far this season, Kyoto sit 11th place after numerous smash-and-grab performances against top sides like Kawasaki Frontale and Shimizu S-Pulse saw them steal all three points.


Both of their crucial wins were away - capped off by immense performances of the brazilian Elias.


Rafael Elias has been one of their main entertainers this season; two goals, three assists in six games establish him as one of the best players in the J1 League.


While towering veteran Gakuji Ota has been responsible for being the leader of the defence, his average rating of 7.28 (via FotMob) has been well and truly illustrated in his performances.


Ota's biggest feat was highlighted in the 1-0 siege away against Kawasaki Frontale which saw Kyoto gain a crucial win.


In summary, Kyoto Sanga is a team with underrated talent, veterens, and entertaining, rebellious football. Will you choose to follow the most traditional club in the J-League?
